TuAS: More Than Just Another Art Space

Hey there! Have you heard about a new art space in Masjid Tanah that’s about to be officially launched on November 10th? For all art lovers around Melaka and neighboring states, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Tukang Arca Art Space, or TuAS for short, is more than just an art gallery—it’s a full-fledged art center equipped with a sculpture workshop, frame workshop, a gallery space on the first floor, and a cozy café called Kopi Arca.

What’s Happening Upstairs?

In the gallery space located upstairs, you can catch the latest exhibition, Conteng, which runs from October 24 to December 30, 2024. This exhibition is special because it’s not just a typical art show. It aims to bring art closer to the community, spark creativity, and strengthen local connections through the arts.

Who’s Behind the Conteng Exhibition?

Conteng features four artists with unique backgrounds: Dr. Rosli Zakaria, the owner of Tukang Arca and an experienced sculptor; Abdullah Jones, a prolific painter and writer; Khairulsani Ismail, a painter; and Mohd Affandi Ramli (Ronasina), a cartoonist and writer. What sets them apart? Dr. Rosli has a formal fine arts education, while the other three are self-taught artists, each contributing their own perspective to the Malaysian art scene.

What's Exciting About Conteng?

Conteng showcases over 300 sketches of various sizes throughout the gallery. Additionally, 40 sketchbooks and 20 3D sketches crafted from iron give the exhibition a unique educational, or 'pedagogical' quality. Visitors can browse these sketchbooks and dive into the fundamentals of creating art.

Plus, you can ask Dr. Rosli himself about each artwork! He's likely more than happy to share insights on the show and discuss the broader Malaysian art scene. And if you're interested in public sculpture, be sure to ask—he's one of Malaysia's top go-to figures for public sculpture and can offer a wealth of knowledge on the topic.

Interactive Activities Throughout the Exhibition

To make the experience even more engaging, visitors can try their hand at sketching on a banner in the gallery’s outdoor space or attend an art talk with invited panelists. These activities are designed to make art feel interactive and accessible to everyone.

Tukang Arca Art Space: More Than Just a Gallery

As mentioned above, TuAS is far more than just a gallery. Founded by Dr. Rosli Zakaria, a former senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Melaka, TuAS operates daily (except Sundays and public holidays) from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., welcoming anyone interested in art. In addition to exhibitions like Conteng, TuAS also hosts visual art workshops and the Borak Arca podcast. This platform draws in students and the local community, helping to grow the creative economy and nurture an interest in visual art.

If you’re looking for a unique art experience, the Conteng Exhibition at TuAS is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of diverse sketching styles—a truly memorable experience.

No need to travel to the Klang Valley for great art anymore; TuAS brings high-quality art right to your locality. So, come one, come all, and experience the vibrant art community in Masjid Tanah!

You Suck! So You Should Stop Being An Artist by Khairul Ehsani Sapari

Yeah, you heard me. Think I’m joking? Nope. And no, I’m not just trying to get your attention. By the way, if you’re a successful artist, this article isn’t for you. I hate you. Go away. Now move along...… Still here? Alright, let me tell you why you should stop being an artist. Let's address the elephant in the room: as an artist, you suck. You're not exactly selling like nasi lemak. No matter how many paintings, sculptures, or prints you produce, they're just not flying off the walls. The occasional red dot on your artwork's nameplate might have felt like a victory, but let's face it, those moments were few and far between. So, what do you do? You keep pouring money into canvas, paint tubes, and brushes, convincing yourself it's an investment for the future. But in reality, your studio space is slowly turning into a dusty storage unit, filled with unsold creations that seem more like burdens than assets. And we're just talking about those random open-c...
